What signals do Gemini and ChatGPT consider or learn from when making ranking decisions with seo?  Here are a few signals we have seen impacting AI’s consumption of content so far:

Content-Related Signals

  1. Keyword Relevance: Boring we know, but it still matters. The presence and distribution of keywords in the content, title, headings, and meta descriptions.
  2. Content Quality: Depth, originality, and comprehensiveness of the content. High-quality, well-researched, and authoritative content ranks higher. No fake author names here.
  3. Semantic Relevance: Use of related terms and natural language processing to understand context and topic relevance.
  4. Freshness: Newer content is more relevant, especially in rapidly developing spaces. Recency of the content, especially for topics where up-to-date information is crucial. If your site is 5yrs old, it’s expired milk in the eyes of AI.
  5. Interesting Media: We use custom photography everywhere we can, videos, infographics, and other media types that enhance user experience. Stock images are better than nothing, but we can confirm that AI can absolutely detect the same image used on say (150 law firm websites)  and deem you as “me too” instead of authoritative in the space.

Technical Performance Factors

  1. Page Speed: Faster-loading pages provide a better user experience and are ranked higher. It impacts bounce rate and many other factors. This one is a biggy.
  2. Mobile Friendliness: Pages optimized for mobile devices rank better due to the increasing use of mobile search.
  3. Structured Data: Use of schema markup to provide additional context to search engines about the content.

User Engagement Metrics

  1. Click-Through Rate (CTR): The percentage of users who click on a search result. Higher CTR indicates relevance.
  2. Bounce Rate: The percentage of users who leave the site after viewing only one page. Lower bounce rates suggest valuable content.
  3. Dwell Time: The amount of time users spend on a page. Longer dwell times can indicate higher engagement and interest.
  4. User Interaction: Comments, shares, and other forms of engagement can signal content value.

Backlinks

  1. Quality of Backlinks: Links from authoritative and relevant sites not to be confused with your typical link builder offering with a fake author on a junk site, those days are over.
  2. Quantity of Backlinks: A higher number of backlinks can improve ranking, but quality is more important than quantity. It’s tempting here to hire a firm promising hundreds of links in a month or two, ironically that will cause more harm than good. It’s incredibly hard to deliver quality relevant links, hence why we have never been able to find a link builder capable of doing that, so we do it ourselves.
  3. Anchor Text: Low hanging fruit here, but the text used in back links, which provides context about the linked page’s content.

Additional Factors

  1. User Location: Geographical relevance can and will affect local search results for most users
  2. Search History and Personalization: Individual user’s search history and preferences can tailor search results. Think Neural networks here, this is where it comes into play.
  3. Social Signals: Another low hanging fruit item here of lesser importance in our opinion due to the prevalent use of bots,  Social media shares and mentions might influence rankings indirectly through increased visibility and traffic.
